If you’ve just moved to Mallorca — congratulations! You’re about to start a new chapter on one of the most desirable islands in the Mediterranean. To make your arrival as smooth as possible, we’ve put together a list of the 10 essential things to do during your first week in Mallorca.

This guide is for you, whether you’re moving here full-time or setting up your second home on the island.

1. Register with your local council

The padrón municipal (residency register) is an essential administrative step that allows you to access public services, enrol your children in school, obtain resident discounts, and even apply for your health card.

Where to do it: At your local town hall (Ajuntament).
What you’ll need: Your identity document and your rental contract or property deed.

2. Apply for your health card (SIP)

Once registered, you can go to your local health centre to obtain your public health card. This gives you access to the Balearic health system (IB-Salut).

You can also take out private health insurance if you prefer — especially useful if you are not yet employed or waiting for qualifications to be recognised.

3. Open a local bank account

Although many transactions can be done online, having a Spanish bank account will make it much easier to manage utility payments, local subscriptions, and direct debits.

Tip: Visit a branch experienced in assisting international clients. Many offer multilingual support and services tailored for non-residents.

4. Set up your utilities: electricity, water, internet

If your property is new or has been empty for a while, make sure your utilities are activated. If they are already connected, ensure they are in your name to avoid future issues.

In rural areas, internet access may require alternative options such as radio fibre or 4G. We recommend asking your neighbours or estate agent for advice.

5. Download these essential apps

Life in Mallorca becomes even easier with the right tools:

  • TIB – Public transport (intercity buses and trains)

  • EMT Palma – Urban buses in Palma

  • IB-Salut – Manage medical appointments

  • Repsol Waylet – Refuel with discounts

  • El Tiempo.es – Check local weather (Mallorca’s microclimates vary by area)

6. Explore your new neighbourhood on foot

Spend at least one morning wandering around your area at a relaxed pace: discover local supermarkets, pharmacies, bakeries, markets and restaurants.

You might also join a local activity — yoga classes, farmers’ markets, or sports clubs are a great way to integrate and meet new people.

7. Visit your local market (mercat)

Every town has its own weekly market. There you’ll find fruit, vegetables, local produce, crafts, and — most importantly — the true heartbeat of local life.

Bonus: It’s the perfect place to practise your Spanish (or Catalan) and get to know your new neighbours.

8. Learn about recycling and waste collection

Mallorca is strongly committed to sustainability, and each municipality has its own recycling and waste collection system.

Some areas have green points (puntos verdes) for specific waste, and designated days for leaving large household items. Check with your town hall, landlord, or estate agent for details.

9. Locate nearby emergency and health services

Save the following on your phone:

  • Local health centre (PAC or CAP)

  • Nearest fire station

  • Local police or Guardia Civil station

And remember the emergency number in Spain: 112.

10. Enjoy your new life on the island

Finally, give yourself permission to enjoy it! Have a coffee by the sea, savour an ensaïmada guilt-free, and start building routines that make you feel truly at home.

You could start with a little getaway to:

  • Cala Mondragó, if you’re in the south

  • Sóller and its historic train

  • Pollença for northern charm
